Gustavus Inn at Glacier Bay rests in the Salmon River meadow at the center of town. A quick bike ride takes you to the banks of the river, Pep's Packing, Beartrack Mercantile, and Gusto Hardware. The boat harbor and dock are just down the road. We grow a big Alaskan garden for the table and feature Icy Straits seafood daily. Our six stool bar invites tales of the day and visiting with our varied guests over hors d'ouvres before a punctual dinner at 6:30, leaving you free to relax for the evening.
Grab a bike, throw some shoes, or catch up on the wi-fi after dinner. Non fishing guests are comfortable here with activities like the afternoon nature walk, wandering the garden, and biking making an interesting day on shore. Comfortable spacious guest rooms allow room to spread out with a view to the meadows and Icy Strait. Our naturalist library, hearth room and front porch invite make it seem like home. Mid day, a simple homemade soup and fresh bread bring you back from adventures on land, or we pack a really great sack lunch to your order for fishermen.

Dave and JoAnn were married in the dining room at Gustavus Inn in 1972. They have raised four children at the Inn and depend on many local residents, family and friends to help them run the Inn in the summer
Why did you move to Gustavus, Alaska?
Dave's parents, Jack and Sally Lesh started the Gustavus Inn in 1965. Dave finished high school by correspondence as there was no high school here. In the early days
the Gustavus Inn at Glacier Bay ran the school bus, hosted the Post Office, took hourly weather readings, was the only phone and radiotelephone contact in town, had 24 hour power for every one's freezers and batteries, was open daily as a coffee shop and restaurant, and hosted work crews for building the Glacier Bay Lodge, in addition to starting tourism in Gustavus.
What do you do during the off-season?
We live in Kansas City with our daughter, who needs assistance.
What is your favorite thing to do at the lodge?
For Dave that would be gardening, for JoAnn picking flowers and meeting people.
What is your favorite meal served at the lodge?
For Dave that would be all menus, all the time. For JoAnn it would be Barbequed King Salmon
Besides fishing, what is your favorite activity in Gustavus?
We enjoy sitting by a campfire outside or the wood stove inside. So cutting wood also rates there!
What is your favorite fish to catch in Alaska?
King Salmon
Besides fishing, what one thing should everyone who visits Gustavus, Alaska see or do?
Go on the Glacier Bay boat tour and spend time with the whales
