What is your Fishing Experience… I grew up fishing the lakes, streams and rivers of Northern New England. I was raised in a small rural Maine town where hunting and fishing were common activities. My family originates in Down East Maine, many of my ancestors were Fishermen, or Lobstermen. I earned my sea legs working as a deckhand aboard David McVane's lobster boat, "Empty Pockets". David is a third generation Cliff Island Lobsterman who has been hauling gear for nearly 80 years in and near the waters of Casco Bay. My favorite species to fish for in Maine are Blue Sharks, Striped Bass, and Bluefish while in the salt, and my fresh water fishing efforts center around the Rangeley Lakes region in the northwestern mountainous part of the state while in pursuit of Brook Trout and Landlocked Salmon. Areas you have fished besides Gustavus, Alaska?

While in college earning a Bachelors in Psychology I was a Teachers Assistant, Research Assistant, and Statistics Tutor. Prior to college I served in the United States Marine Corps as a Rifleman for four years.

What is your favorite fishing technique?
The most fun for me is "Darting" the outer coast for Cohos when they are plentiful.
Why did you become a fishing boat captain?
It was something I had a passion for and saw that I could be really good at.
What is your favorite place in Gustavus, Alaska?
I like all of it, but I love the outer coast. It is so beautiful and rugged out there.
If you were only in Gustavus for a week, besides fishing what would you recommend?
You must to go see the glaciers on a flight seeing trip. It is best after dinner while the sun is low on the horizon, it is an awesome experience.
What is the coolest thing you have seen from a Black Rock Charters boat?
I saw a frenzy of salmon sharks on the outer coast. During the frenzy a salmon jumped out of the water and right behind it was a 7 ft. salmon shark; the shark jumped completely out of the water with its mouth wide open chasing the salmon. It was Awesome!
Strangest tourist question you have ever heard?
The strangest question I have heard is, "How many years does it take for a Deer to turn into a Moose?" After a brief pause and somewhat puzzled look, my response, "Seven."
What is the best part about being a fishing boat captain?
Being on the water everyday, catching fish, and meeting new people, most of all helping them catch all the variety of fish that Alaska has to offer!

I currently reside in Colorado during the winter months.
